NOPEC: Making Heads or Tails of Recent Events & What It Means to You

Let us guess. You’ve recently heard about the FirstEnergy Solutions (FES) and Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council (NOPEC) breakup and still have no idea what it means. Don’t worry; you’re definitely not alone. There are quite a few telemarketers & door knockers spreading false information and fear by claiming NOPEC customers must “act now.” We’re here to tell you: don’t be fooled, keep calm, and know the facts.

So here’s what we know today. FES terminated its supply contract with NOPEC, effective December 31, 2016. On the heels of this termination, NOPEC has executed a 3-year agreement with NextEra Energy Services Ohio to supply power to 500,000 Northeast Ohio consumers & small businesses, effective January 1, 2017. For the first eight months (January – August), prices will be set at rates approximately 6% lower than utility regulated pricing set by the Illuminating Company and Ohio Edison.

NOPEC customers will receive opt-out notices for service under this new program with NextEra in the next few weeks. If a NOPEC customer does not opt-out, they will be automatically included in the program.

As a NOPEC customer, you can do one of two things:

  1. Opt-Out - Wait to receive your opt-out notice from NOPEC and return it as instructed by the due date. By opting out, you can select your own power supplier or go back to the utility’s Standard Service Offer (SSO).

  2. Do Nothing - Take no action and remain in NOPEC’s program.

If you have accounts enrolled with NOPEC and want an honest review of your options, NSE is happy to help. Just give us a call or send us an email.

Chagrin Falls, OH – North Shore Energy (NSE) announced today that Jennifer Gress Simpson has joined the company to lead NSE’s corporate communications and to develop new, innovative programs that drive revenue for its Partners. She brings over 15 years of energy industry expertise to NSE.

“Jennifer’s proven ability to identify and communicate complex energy buying strategies in simple terms will be critical to our future growth.  Our clients want more than the simple price comparison service many brokers offer; our clients want help managing their overall energy spend year over year,” said NSE President Chris Greulich.  “In addition, she will officially launch NSE’s innovative Partner in Energy (PIE) Program, which has proven to be a tremendous success for its members during our 18-month pilot testing phase. Feedback from PIE members has been consistent: the use of the Program has helped them win more business, driven down costs, and removed the tedious hassle of back office duties.”

Jennifer began her career at The Williams Companies in Tulsa, Oklahoma where she advanced through many positions including Mergers & Acquisitions, Midstream Gas & Liquids, and the 24/7 Real-Time Power Trading & Dispatch Desk. In 2007, she joined Lehman Brothers in Houston as a Senior Real-Time Power Trader. Jennifer was later recruited by Champion Energy Services to assist with their Northeast US retail electricity sales efforts. Most recently, Jennifer was Director of Sales at MP2 Energy, responsible for the growth and expansion of MP2’s presence in PJM, as well as increasing market share through a reputable channel partner network she’s developed over the years. Jennifer holds a BBA in Marketing and International Business and a BA in Spanish from The University of Oklahoma.

“Having been exposed to both sides of the electricity coin (wholesale & retail), I’ve had a rare and valuable opportunity to learn about the power industry’s diversity of supply chains and markets. Being able to draw on that experience and couple it with a passion for marketing & communications at this stage in my career is fortuitous. In joining NSE’s team of highly talented and respected professionals, we will be uniquely positioned to make a meaningful impact on the future of energy in the state of Ohio and beyond,” said Jennifer Gress Simpson.

North Shore Energy’s goal is to earn the distinction of “Trusted Advisor” with each and every one of our clients.  With over 150 years of energy experience, our team of professionals work extensively in the commercial & industrial space and provide expert representation in the energy markets for our clients.  NSE manages over 1 billion kilowatt-hours of power and over 1 million MMBtu of natural gas per year.
